BARLBY HIGH SCHOOL IS PART OF

Public meeting re future of swimming pool

Future of school swimming pool to be discussed at public meeting

A public meeting is to be held at Barlby High School to inform the local community about the future of its swimming pool.

The public meeting will be held at 6.00pm on Monday 21 January at the school. Visitors will hear from senior leaders at Barlby High and members of the Hope Sentamu Learning Trust, to which the school belongs, and have the opportunity to ask questions.

The swimming pool was originally built in the 1970s and later covered with a polycarbonate and metal housing in the 1980s. It has been closed for a over a year as a substantial amount of money needed to be spent on improvements in order to meet health and safety regulations.

Since the closure, the school and Hope Sentamu Learning Trust have been looking at options for the future of the pool. The options for the school are proving challenging and are currently: 1) Demolition of the swimming pool 2) Refurbishment of the swimming pool housing.

Principal of Barlby High School, Julie Caddell, said “It is regrettable that we are in a position where we need to look at these two opposing options, but it is necessary to make sure we do the right thing for the financial stability of our school and ultimately the future  of our pupils.

“We would really like to inform the public, regardless of whether they have a connection with the school to ensure that everyone is fully aware of the challenges we currently face. We would be particularly interested to hear from anyone who has creative suggestions about the future of the pool or the land upon which it stands.”
